Dr. Alex Earle – Miami Plastic Surgeon at Pure Plastic Surgery

So, I want to discuss the subject of skin laxity. Okay. It’s often a subject that’s not well understood by patients and it’s very, very important in terms of the expectations for your final outcome. So, first of all, what is skin laxity? So skin laxity is essentially the looseness of the skin and it has a lot to do with the quality of the skin. So, it’s how well that skin is going to expand and then retract and bounce back. There are factors that affect the skin laxity. And these can be massive weight loss, pregnancy, smoking, sun exposure. And then, of course, there’s some genetic factors as well. So, it really has to do with how well the skin’s going to bounce back after a procedure such as liposuction and BBL. And depending on how much skin laxity you have, that depends on the expectations of how well that skin is going to be able to retract and bounce back.

A lot of times it won’t be able to bounce back well after liposuction, and therefore the patient needs to know that in advance, because we’re going to need to do some sort of skin tightening procedure after the liposuction or BBL procedure. Now, this depends on the degree of skin laxity after the liposuction. So, if it’s fairly mild, then we can do something such as body type. If it’s moderate, a lot of times we can do a mini tummy tuck. And if you have a more severe degree of skin laxity, oftentimes a full tummy tuck is necessary after your liposuction procedure to really remove that excess poor quality skin, and tighten up the skin envelope for an optimal result.

Skin laxity is also very important in the chin and neck area. Typically, younger patients who have not had large fluctuations in weight have good quality skin, and therefore liposuction alone would be the solution to improve the contour of the chin and neck. However, if you have poor skin quality in the area, you have a lot or more skin laxity, and we have to add an adjunct, such as FaceTite.

FaceTite is a machine that uses radio frequency energy to create an inflammatory response in that skin, therefore allowing the skin to retract back better after your liposuction for a much, much better result overall. Skin Tightening
